Police in Wamala Region have launched an investigation into circumstances surrounding the death of a young woman whose body was dumped by the roadside.
This was after residents found the body of an unidentified young woman abandoned on a feeder road in Kyankwanzi District on Tuesday morning.
The grim discovery was made along the Kiboga–Ntwetwe–Nkoko road by residents of Kisutwa village in Gayaza sub-county, according to police.
Charles Sempijja, the village chairperson, alerted the Gayaza Police Station (located in Kiboga) at approximately 10:30 am on Tuesday, prompting the immediate dispatch of a homicide investigation team and a Scene of Crime Officer (SOCO) to secure and process the area.
Investigators found the deceased, an adult female estimated to be in her 20s, wrapped in white bedsheets and dumped on the roadside.
Detectives are currently working on the theory that the woman may have died at a private health facility before her body was clandestinely disposed of.
By press time, the body has been transferred to the Ntwetwe Health Center IV mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lameck Kigozi, the Public Relations Officer for the Wamala Region, urged the public to come forward with any relevant information.
“We appeal to anybody who can help identify the deceased to report to the Kyankwanzi Police Station to assist in investigating the circumstances surrounding her death,” SSP Kigozi stated.
This incident occurs against a backdrop of persistent homicide challenges in Uganda. According to the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025, overall reported crimes decreased by 10.2 percent nationwide, but lethal violence remains a critical issue.
The police report identifies deep-seated social issues and community lawlessness as primary drivers of these killings.
Mob justice
Lynching remains a massive concern, with mob action accounting for 950 of the 2025 homicide cases. This means nearly a quarter (22.4 percent) of all homicides in Uganda were perpetrated by vigilante crowds.
Additionally, while overall domestic violence incidents fell to 12,361 cases in 2025, down from 14,073 in 2024, lethal outcomes actually worsened.
Police recorded 208 murders resulting from domestic abuse, representing a 13.7 percent increase from the 183 cases documented the previous year.
While the justice system showed active progress in 2025—with 31,732 convictions secured from 79,291 prosecuted cases out of 196,405 total reported crimes nationwide—police officials note that gaps in forensic capacity and localized community disputes continue to hinder the efficient resolution of homicide investigations.
