KASESE - Police in Kasese district have launched investigations into the death of a 20-year-old man, who was allegedly assaulted by a mob after being mistaken for a thief.
Wilson Mumbere, a resident of Sayuni Central Cell in Rugendabara Kikongo Town Council, died at Rukoki Hospital on Monday (July 13) evening, days after sustaining serious injuries during the attack.
According to Elly Maate, the Police Publicist for Rwenzori East Region, the incident occurred in the early hours of July 11, 2026, at around 2:00am. Maate said Mumbere had left his home to attend a funeral within Sayuni Central Cell when members of the public suspected him of being a thief.
"He was suspected to be a thief by members of the public, who reacted by assaulting him in a mob action. In the process, he sustained serious injuries," Maate said.
Mumbere's parents rushed him to Rukoki Hospital for treatment, but he succumbed to his injuries on July 13, 2026, at around 8:00pm.
Police had initially registered the case as an assault at Rugendabara Kikongo Police Station, but it has since been upgraded to murder following Mumbere's death.
Authorities said the victim's body will be examined as investigators work to identify those involved in the attack, with arrests expected to follow to pave way for prosecution.
Police said investigations are ongoing.
