Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding a former Makerere University student's controversial appearance at the university's Freshers Ball last weekend after she undressed and danced naked before a crowd of students.
The former student is currently receiving medication at Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital, according to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala.
The incident happened on October 31, when a video showing the suspect undressing and later dancing completely naked during the Freshers Ball circulated widely on social media, attracting mixed reactions and sparking debate about student conduct at campus parties.
Speaking about the incident, Kawala said police had opened a case of public nuisance as they sought to establish the circumstances that led to the student's actions.
However, investigations have since established that she was experiencing mental health challenges and had been receiving medical attention at Butabika.
“That act was unusual, and we rarely get cases of people undressing before the public. As we investigate to come to a conclusion, she is also receiving the needed treatment at Butabika,” Kawala said.
Her hospitalisation and ongoing treatment have become part of the circumstances police are considering as they investigate the incident.
Kawala also urged universities and other institutions organising student celebrations to work closely with police to ensure that such events are conducted safely and responsibly.
She condemned the incident and called on students to exercise restraint and respect themselves while attending public celebrations.
“We condemn such embarrassing actions. The people who attend those celebrations should make sure they enjoy them responsibly,” she said.
