Parliament has approved Zeija appointment as Chief Justice—State House

The development follows today's (January 22, 2026) Parliament's appointments committee, chaired by Speaker Anita Among, vetting Zeija, who is currently the Deputy Chief Justice.

Parliament has today approved Justice Flavian Zeija to replace retired Chief Justice Owiny-Dollo, New Vision Online has learnt.

The development follows today's (January 22, 2026) Parliament's appointments committee, chaired by Speaker Anita Among, vetting Zeija, who is currently the Deputy Chief Justice.

"The committee's report will be forwarded to the appointing authority in accordance with our rules of procedure," Among said. She, however, did not disclose the results of the vetting exercise, which involved several legislators, including her deputy, Thomas Tayebwa.

However, special presidential assistant in charge of press and mobilisation, Faruk Kirunda, about an hour later, said Parliament has approved Zeija's appointment following the submission of his name to the House in accordance with the Constitution.

As a result of the approval, Kirunda, who is also the State House deputy spokesperson, said in a statement that President Yoweri Museveni, 'in exercise of the powers vested in the President by Article 142(1) of the 1995 Constitution, and acting on the advice of the Judicial Service Commission, ' President Museveni has appointed Zeija as Chief Justice.
