KALUNGU - Police in Masaka East Region have shot dead a suspected robber and recovered a stolen motorcycle after they laid an ambush in Kalungu District following a robbery in which a couple was attacked and injured.

The suspects, who police said had been terrorising residents in parts of Kalungu and Bukomansimbi districts, allegedly attacked John Viane Kalungi and his wife at Bukalasa Junction along the Kalungu-Masaka road at about 9:00pm on October 4, 2026.

According to police, the two suspects, armed with pangas, robbed the couple of their motorcycle, registration number UFS 009E, and injured them.

The motorcycle was recovered the following day after it was found hidden inside an abandoned house in Kyamusoke village.

Twaha Kasirye, the Masaka East and West regional police spokesperson, said officers from Kaliro Police Station, working with members of the community, mounted an ambush at the abandoned house in an attempt to arrest the suspects.

“At about 8:30pm, two men identified as Lawrence Kibuuka, 28, and Moses Monigabo reportedly returned to the house to collect the motorcycle. Kibuuka attacked Police constable Swaley Aliga during the operation, prompting a pursuit in which one of the suspects was shot and died at the scene, while his accomplice escaped,” Kasirye said.

The body was conveyed to Masaka Regional Referral Hospital for postmortem examination.

Police recovered the stolen motorcycle and a panga believed to have been used by the suspects.

Kasirye commended residents for providing information that helped police recover the motorcycle and track the suspects.

He cautioned people involved in robbery to abandon crime and seek lawful means of earning a living, saying police would continue working with communities to apprehend suspected criminals.

Kasirye said efforts to trace the escaped suspect are ongoing.
