Out-of-control trailer crashes three to death in Sheema

Three people died and others were critically injured Tuesday evening after a trailer rammed into pedestrians and street vendors in Kabwohe town in Sheema district.
The incident happened at around 7:20pm.
The trailer (UA 234DK) was transporting palm oil from Ishaka towards Mbarara.
It lost control and crashed into street vendors and people who were waiting for commuter taxis at the Kabwohe-Mbarara taxi stage.
The vehicle also hit other smaller cars and motorcycles parked along the road.

The injured victims were taken to different health facilities in Sheema for emergency treatment.

Eyewitness Shafik Kazibwe told New Vision that the trailer appeared to have lost control after hitting a hump.
Godfrey Ahimbisibwe, whose car was among those damaged in the crash, attributed the accident to the narrowness of the Ishaka-Mbarara Road and called for its urgent rehabilitation.
He said it poses a danger to motorists and other road users, particularly in busy areas such as Kabwohe town.
Michael Kananura, the traffic police spokesperson, said preliminary information indicated that the truck was loaded with palm oil and was resting on a Toyota Premio, where additional victims were suspected to be trapped.
He said efforts were under way to remove the truck using an excavator to enable police and other emergency responders to access the Premio and establish whether there were additional casualties.
“More details will be provided once the recovery operation is completed and the scene has been fully assessed,” said Kananura.
