NAMUTUMBA - Police in Namutumba district have arrested a 25-year-old man suspected of beheading a three-year-old boy.

The suspect was identified as Halidi Zibwa.

Busoga East police spokesperson Michael Kasadha said he is alleged to have descended on the son of his stepmother and beheaded the toddler.

This tragedy reportedly happened on Friday morning in Bulyansaala village, Mpumiro parish, Bulange sub-county in Namutumba.

Zibwa is reported to have gone to Joan Mukoda's garden, where she was harvesting groundnuts, and picked up her son Junior Tiba under the pretext of playing with him, before disappearing with him.

When the toddler did not resurface, Zibwa told Police she started a desperate search for her son.

She later found him dead and beheaded

Upon the gruesome discovery, the terrified mother sounded an alarm, which attracted residents

It led to the arrest of the suspect, a resident of Bugali village in Mpumiro parish.

Police had intervened just in time to save the suspect from irate residents who bayed for blood.

Preliminary findings indicated that Zibwa is a renowned drug addict.

Police had yet to find the object used in the beheading

Kasadha condemned the brutal murder and urged parents to be vigilant in caring for and protecting their children

He also urged the public to report suspected drug addicts to avoid the occurrence of similar crimes.

“We implore the public to always report people who seem to be under the influence of drugs because they are a threat to the community. This incident would not have occurred if they had reported Zibwa early enough,” said Kasadha.

He said the purpose of reporting such people is to remove them from society for better rehabilitation and management.

Meanwhile, the toddler's remains were collected and taken to Nsinze Health Centre IV mortuary as police continued with their investigations to establish the motive.
