The Nakivubo Stadium management has lined up a sports bonanza for the ardent sports fans as the refurbished stadium reopens on June 1.
Seven years ago, Ham Enterprises was mandated to redevelop the stadium under a public-private partnership, leading to the multi-purpose sports facility being built to international standards.
Apart from football, which was and is still the core for which it was built, it can now host boxing, netball, basketball, and table tennis among other indoor sports.
The stadium’s strategic location in the heart of Kampala and its rich history in Ugandan football will soon be reignited when it is finally opened up with two football fixtures between URA and Kitara and the other involving one of the historical and big derbies between Express FC and SC Villa.
The basketball enthusiasts will also watch two matches at the facility for the first time, with the KIU Titans taking on the JT Jaguars before the Nam Blazers entertain the UCU Canons on the new court. NIC Netball Club will entertain Prisons on the new netball court.
The grand opening will climax with a boxing match between Isaac Zebra and Ibrahim Kitaka before the biggest kickboxing rematch in the country between Moses Golola and Umar Semata.
In between fans will enjoy musical performances from several artists lined up in between a fireworks display.
