Muslims in Hoima city have been urged to uphold the values of the Islamic faith as well as observe unity and peace even after the holy month of Ramadhan.

This was the message of Sheikh Rajab Mugenyi, the Bunyoro Muslim district kadhi, while preaching during the Eid el-Fitr prayers at Hoima Boma grounds.

He said it is also important for believers to love each other.

The Eid el-Fitr holiday marks the end of the fasting period. The timing of the holiday is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, in accordance with the Muslim lunar calendar.

During Ramadhan, hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world fast from sunrise to sunset.

Observing this holy month is one of the five pillars of Islam, requiring believers to abstain from eating, drinking, smoking and sex during daylight hours.

Observant Muslims are also encouraged to donate to the poor.

Meanwhile, Hoima resident city commissioner Badru Mugenyi appealed to the Muslim community to respect one another as well as embrace government programmes.
