The Ministry of Public Service, through its permanent secretary, Catherine Bitarakwate Musingwiire, has announced Friday, March 20, 2026, as a public holiday to enable Muslims across the country to celebrate Idd el Fitr, also known as the "Festival of Breaking the Fast."

Bitarakwate, in her letter to the permanent secretary, Ministry of Information, Communication Technology and National Guidance, said, "The Honourable Minister of Public Service informs the general public that tomorrow, Friday, March 20, 2026, is Idd el Fitr, and will be observed as a public holiday throughout Uganda.”

The day marks the end of Ramadan, a period of fasting, reflection and prayer for Muslims worldwide. Ramadan is the month when devout Muslims fast daily from dawn to sunset.

Multitudes of the Muslim community are expected to throng mosques across the country for prayers before proceeding with celebrations later in the day.
