Muslims to celebrate Idd al-Fitr on Friday

Both Muslim clerics have congratulated the Muslims upon completion of the holy month of Ramadhan and urged them to pay Zakatul al-Fitr for enormous benefits.

The Ugandan Muslim Community will celebrate Idd al-Fitr, which marks an end to the holy month of Ramadan, on Friday, March 20, 2026.

Both the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) and the Office of the Supreme Mufti of Uganda said the moon has not been sighted today evening as it had been anticipated. 

“I wish to inform the Muslim community that the crescent moon has not been sighted. Therefore, Idd-al-Fitr will be celebrated on Friday, March 20, 2026,” Dr Abdul Hafiz Walusimbi said during a press conference on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

Walusimbi is the director of sharia and legal affairs in the office of the Supreme Mufti.

Dr Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, the director of sharia at UMSC, also confirmed that the moon has not been sighted.

Muslims are supposed to fast between 29 or 30 days. In case the moon has not been sighted on the 29th night, they are required to complete the 30 days.
