President Yoweri Museveni has renewed his call on Ugandans to engage in income-generating activities, urging religious leaders to mobilise believers to fight poverty through wealth creation while pursuing their spiritual growth.

The President made the appeal on July 4, 2026, during the reinstallation of Pr Godfrey Lubwama as president of the West Buganda Field of the Seventh-day Adventist (SDA) Church at Kiyudaya in Busimbi division, Mityana municipality.

In a message delivered by Second Deputy Prime Minister Dr Crispus Kiyonga, Museveni said Christians should emulate Jesus Christ, who combined ministry with productive work.

“All believers should take the example of Jesus who, besides feeding the hungry, preaching and healing the sick, was also a carpenter,” Museveni said.

Museveni urged religious leaders to support government poverty eradication programmes by encouraging every household to undertake at least one income-generating enterprise.

He described poverty among believers as an “affliction” that should be eradicated, warning that subsistence farming perpetuates poverty because it primarily produces for household consumption.

The President encouraged Ugandans to venture into commercial agriculture, industry, services and information and communication technology to generate sustainable incomes.

He also congratulated Lubwama on his reinstallation for a second term and prayed that God grants him wisdom, integrity and humility as he leads the church.

Museveni commended the SDA Church for partnering with the government in socio-economic transformation through the establishment of schools and health facilities.

He reaffirmed the government's commitment to maintaining peace and security while investing in infrastructure to attract investment, create jobs and improve household incomes.

Speaking at the function, Lands Minister and Mityana District Woman MP Judith Nabakooba urged local leaders to intensify mobilisation for government programmes, particularly the Parish Development Model.

She warned against corruption in the implementation of the programme, saying some beneficiaries had previously complained of receiving less than the approved sh1m.

“The President was clear when he launched the ‘Kisanja Hakuna Kulala’ campaign. Let all local leaders work with us to ensure that every beneficiary receives the full amount and that we eliminate corruption,” Nabakooba said.

The installation ceremony was presided over by SDA Church of Uganda Archbishop Pr Samuel Kajoba, who said the President's "Kisanja Hakuna Kulala" campaign resonates with biblical teachings on diligence and hard work.

Kajoba also welcomed the President's anti-corruption drive, saying it aligns with the church's teachings, and urged the newly installed leadership to remain united and accessible to the faithful.

Lubwama appealed to the President for financial support towards three major church projects: Kigalama Hospital, the construction of the main church and the Kalamba Heritage Centre.

The President donated sh20m to support Lubwama as he begins his second term in office.

Mityana district chairperson Joseph Luzige thanked Nabakooba for championing the approval of the district development plan, which secured sh38b for infrastructure development.

He appealed to the government to upgrade Mityana Hospital to a regional referral facility, equip it with a modern X-ray machine, establish an intensive care unit and provide an ambulance.
