A businesswoman has been stabbed to death in her shop in Bamunanika cell, Katakala ward, in an incident police are treating as a homicide, while her seven-year-old daughter sat outside the family home unaware that her mother was dying inside.
Lydia Nansubuga, commonly known as Madam, was found on the morning of July 11, 2026, with two stab wounds to the neck after a neighbour went looking for her child, who had been sent to buy groceries from Nansubuga’s shop but had not returned.
According to Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police Publicist, neighbour Eron Nampewo arrived at the shop at about 10:30 am and found Nansubuga’s young daughter seated by the door.
When asked where her mother was, the child reportedly said she was sick and resting inside the house.
Moments later, Nampewo heard Nansubuga’s voice from inside the house. The victim was weak but audible, saying: “Munyambe nfa.”
The phrase, in Luganda, translates to "help me, I’m dying”.
Nampewo rushed inside and found Nansubuga lying in a pool of blood and still fighting for her life.
She raised the alarm, prompting the local council chairperson and other residents to attempt to rush the victim to Mityana General Hospital.
However, Nansubuga died as they lifted her from the floor before she could identify her attacker, according to Kigozi.
The chairperson reported the matter to police, and a homicide team from Mityana Central Police Station was deployed to the scene.
A scene-of-crime officer documented the area and recorded statements from witnesses. A knife believed to have been used in the attack was recovered about a metre away from the scene, with blood stains still visible on it.
Nansubuga’s body was taken to Mityana Hospital for a postmortem examination.
No arrests have been made, and police said investigations are ongoing.
Kigozi appealed to residents of Bamunanika cell with any information that could assist the investigation to come forward.
