MITOOMA - Police in Mitooma district have rescued a man who was allegedly kidnapped by a group of suspects posing as security personnel and arrested three people linked to the crime.
The victim, identified as Israel Twesigye, 45, a resident of Sherere Village in Rwoburunga Sub-county, Mitooma District, was reportedly abducted on June 5, 2026.
According to police, the suspects allegedly impersonated security by wearing police-branded T-shirts branded with the Uganda Police label, kidnapped the victim and whisked him away in a motor vehicle with private number plates.
The kidnappers later contacted the victim's relatives and demanded a ransom of Sh30 million in exchange for his release.
Following the report, police launched an intelligence-led operation and deployed tracking teams to trace the suspects.
Greater Bushenyi Regional Police spokesperson, Apollo Tayebwa, said the operation yielded results on June 7, when the suspects were tracked and arrested in Sembabule District.
“The victim was rescued, while three suspects were arrested,” Tayebwa said.
The suspects have been identified as Tumwebaze Onan, Kakunguru Jacob and Naserenga Haustine.
The motor vehicle allegedly used in the crime is held as an exhibit at Mitooma Central Police Station to aid ongoing investigations.
Tayebwa said efforts are underway to apprehend other suspects believed to have participated in the suspected.
He commended the professionalism and dedication of the investigating and tracking teams whose swift response led to the successful rescue of the victim and the disruption of the criminal operation.
