KAMPALA - Police said Tuesday (August 13, 2024) that the death toll from the Kiteezi garbage collapse in Kawempe Division in Kampala rose to 24.

The Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango, confirmed late Tuesday, insisting the operation continued smoothly without any problem.

"The process of retrieving dead bodies progressed well and two (02) more bodies were recovered by 1830 hours. This makes a total of 24 dead bodies so far recovered," Onyanga stated.

He identified the recovered two bodies as Lookman Bukenya, 5, a son of Madina Namboozo and an unidentified male adult aged 35 to 40 years with a chain on the neck and 'rasta hair'.

"The work continues at the scene," he stated.

The rescue team includes personnel from the Uganda Police, Ministry of Works and Transport, Ministry for Disaster Preparedness, Red Cross Society and community members.
