IGANGA - Police in Iganga District have arrested a businessman and two other suspects over allegations that they fabricated a robbery report involving Sh4.7 million after a dispute over a vehicle brokerage commission.
The businessman, identified as Waiswa Kayeyera Mawazi, allegedly reported on October 18, 2026, that four men travelling aboard a Toyota RAV4 had robbed him of Sh4.7 million as he travelled in an Isuzu Elf, registration number UA 717BN.
However, investigations by the police crime intelligence team reportedly found inconsistencies in the account.
Michael Kasadha, the Busoga East regional police spokesperson, said the team, led by D/ASP Ssennono Ismael, analysed automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) records, CCTV footage and telecommunications data.
The investigations established that the Isuzu Elf had not been beyond Iganga town on the date of the alleged robbery, contrary to the report that it was returning from Mbale.
Investigators also found that the movements of the alleged prime suspect had been restricted to Busei in Nakalama Sub-county.
Kasadha said the complainant was re-interrogated and subsequently admitted that the robbery had not occurred.
Police investigations instead linked the report to a disagreement over an outstanding commission of Sh1.4 million arising from the purchase of the vehicle between Mawazi and a motor vehicle broker identified as Owor Ramathan.
According to police, on October 18, the broker removed the tarpaulin covering the vehicle, which was parked in a garage at Nkono Village, in an attempt to recover the outstanding balance
Police said the complainant later reported the alleged robbery on the advice of another person identified as Ali Najib.
Mawazi and the two other suspects were detained at Iganga Central Police Station to assist with investigations into giving false information to police, contrary to Section 115 of the Penal Code Act.
The case was recorded under SD Ref 109/19/10/2026. Investigations were ongoing at the time of the statement.
