The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone girls football championship kicked off on Wednesday with giants enjoying a goal feast in their respective starts.

Defending champions and record winners Sheema girls were one of the biggest winners of the day, beating Kashwa Girls from Kiruhura 16-0 in their group A opener at the hosting St John Fisher Ibanda SS grounds.

The other day’s biggest win was recorded by title hopefuls Boni Consilii Girls Isingiro, who beat Rubirizi’s Ryeru Seed School 10-0.

Other day’s results saw Kibingo Girls beat Bishop’s Girls 5-0, Ijumo Progressive beat Kagongo 2-0, Maryhill High School playing at the regional level for the first started with a 1-0 win over Creamland Girls, Five Star played to a 1-1 draw against Kitura as Kashaka Girls beat Katenga 3-1, while Kububura registered a 2-0 win over Kyabugimbi SS in the official opening game.

The games were officially opened by Association of Secondary Schools Headteachers in Uganda (ASSHU) Midwestern chairman Denis Turyamureba, in the company of USSSA 1st Vice President Hajji Twahil Kitezara and Turyamureeba urged the government to lessen the burden of spending on schools just like other countries in the region do.

“I would like to send in the head teachers’ request to the government that let the burden of spending on sports be shared. We request the government take over responsibility of funding the games right from the district through to the zone and the national and regional (FEASS) levels just like other countries like Kenya, and Rwanda are doing,” Turyamureeba said.

The five-day competition which attracted over 50 teams, continues on Thursday with several games in each of the 16 groups in the campaign.
