Physical Education and Sports (PES) Commissioner Rev. Can. Duncans Mugumya has scolded school headteachers and administrators who have continued to use ineligible players in school games.

The commissioner observes that impersonation in school games especially football has remained a norm encouraged by headteachers and sports masters, saying the offenders now face arrest and will be charged with impersonation.

The tough-talking Mugumya made the remarks while presiding over the Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole zone boys’ football final at Ibanda CORE PTC grounds on Sunday.

According to zonal chairman Egidio Mucunguzi, 5 teams which include Mayanga Seed, Unique High, Kicwamba High, Buremba SS, and Muntuyera High School Kitunga were disqualified for fielding different categories of ineligible players.

“With the new sports law, we shall be compelled to apprehend the players in question, the games teacher, and the headteacher for helping impersonation in school’s games. We cannot allow non-students into the school sports to deny the young ones a chance to develop their talents,” Mugumya said.

He said he is going to direct that any executive member of USSSA at any level of administration, whose school is found with ineligible players, resign his position or be forced out of the committee with immediate effect for they have no moral authority to lead.

The commissioner thanked Yasin Mugabe, the Welden School proprietor as a private institution that has partnered with the government in talent identification and development.

The school emerged champions of the five-day event, having beaten St Kagwa Bushenyi High School 2-0 in a hotly contested finale.

Champions Welden School and losing finalists St Kagwa will be joined by Ryakasinga CHE and St Augustine Minor Seminary as the four representatives for Ankole zone at this year’s edition of the USSSA national boys’ football championship due at Masaka SS starting end of this month.
