Giants start USSSA Ankole Zone boys football championship with a bang

The Uganda Secondary Schools Sports Association (USSSA) Ankole Zone boys football championship commenced on Wednesday at St. John Fisher Ibanda SS, with title hopefuls starting with emphatic wins.

Among the flying starters were record holders and Sheema district perennial champions Ryakasinga CHE who humbled Isingiro district champions Nakivale SS 4-0 in the opening Group A match.

Mbarara City champions Welden School Mbarara, also a title contender recorded a 2-0 starting win over debutants Nombe SS in Group G as St Augustine whipped Kigarama Seed School 5-0 while Ruhama Central beat Kashwa 5-0 with Kanyabwanga from Mitooma district registering a shocking 1-0 win over Mbarara High School.

However, St Kagwa High School’s title aspirations were given a false start as they played to a 1-1 draw against Isingiro’s Kitsyoro as well as former champions Buremba SS, who started with a disappointing 1-1 against Nyakyera and Kitabi Seminary also played to a 2-2 draw against little known Mayanga Seed school.

The games commenced with the mandatory screening of the athletes by the organizing committee team before an official opening ceremony presided over by Association of Secondary School Headteachers in Uganda (ASSHU) Midwestern region chairman Denis Turyamureba, who warned against the usage of ineligible players.

In the official opening match watched by a mammoth crowd, the hosts St John Fisher Ibanda SS did not disappoint the supporting crowd as they came over Rwentojo SS with a 1-0 starting win.

The five-day event that attracted the best secondary school teams in 13 districts, will climax on April 14 with the finals and awarding ceremony.
