The Police in Kabale District have arrested four suspects believed to be behind a string of violent robberies that left one person dead and others injured.

According to police, the group was involved in the Tuesday night killing of a security guard and the critical injuring of one Loyce Kanyoro near Albertine Hotel in Kabale Municipality.

The attackers robbed victims of several items before proceeding to raid the home of one Sunday Kenneth in Nyabikoni, where they stole his Toyota Noah, registration number UBP 471V, which they used to ferry the loot.

The vehicle was later recovered at Mwanjari after being used to ferry stolen property.

In another case, the same group allegedly broke into two rented rooms at Kamatojo Cell in Mwanjari Ward, Southern Division, where they attacked and injured one Vian Ngororano, 32, a staff member of Kabale High Court.

However, Ngororano bravely fought back, disarmed one of the suspects with a panga, and injured him, forcing the gang to flee.

Police say the incidents all happened between 3:00 am and 4:00 am on October 1, 2025.

The arrests come after growing public concern over a surge in violent robberies in Kabale Municipality. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with security forces to ensure law and order.

Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson ASP Elly Maate identified one of the suspects as Smith Arinda (25) of Kigoro village, Kitoma parish, Rubaya sub-county in Kabale district, who was arrested at Goro Trading Centre, near Katonga River in Mpigi district.

He was nabbed after taking a suspected stolen phone to charge at a local shop.

A search of his residence recovered the ignition key of Kenneth’s Noah vehicle, Kenneth’s shoes and iPhone, as well as a Techno smartphone belonging to the slain askari, an Itel cellphone phone belonging to Loyce Kanyoro and a children's digital tablet.

Others are Mark Asasira, Kennedy Akandwanaho and Owen Arinda alias Shakido, a resident of Bushuro village, Kitumba sub-county, Kabale district, from whom Police recovered a TV and other items stolen from the Albertine Hotel victims.

Asasira (24) sustained injuries during one of the attacks. He was arrested from his hideout in Mbarara, where several stolen items were also recovered. Police say he is originally from Nyakiharo Cell, Mwanjari Ward, Kabale Municipality.

Police speak out

ASP Maate commended the joint efforts of community members and Police in Mpigi, Mbarara, and Kabale, which led to the arrests.

“The territorial Police in Kabale, with the support of Kayabwe Police in Mpigi and our colleagues in Mbarara, worked closely with community members to apprehend these notorious suspects. This cooperation is commendable and shows that together, we can wipe out criminality from our communities,” Maate said.

He added that "upon completion of inquiries, the suspects will face charges including murder, attempted murder, aggravated robbery, and theft of a motor vehicle, among others.”
