The territorial Police in Rukungiri district are investigating a case of alleged kidnap and attempted murder of Angello Twinomuhangi, an independent candidate in the Rukungiri district LC5 race.

He was reportedly discovered tied up, unconscious and abandoned at the Minera bridge in Nyarushanje sub-county in Rukungiri at around 9:30pm on Tuesday (January 6).

Elly Maate, the Kigezi region Police spokesperson, gave an account of what happened as reported to Police.

That night, Alphonse Byamukama, the headteacher of St Jerome Secondary School, Ndama, was driving from Nyarushanje sub-county heading to Rukungiri town. Before reaching the Minera bridge, he was waved down by a bodaboda rider, who pointed him to a person tied up and dumped next to a stationary white vehicle.

“That upon coming closer to the person, he observed that the victim was tied up with a handkerchief across his mouth and the arms were tied from behind with a suspected USB cable," said Maate.

Byamukama's ensuing alarm drew other people, who arrived and identified the man as political candidate Twinomuhangi.

The group reported the discovery to Kebison Police Station, whose officers arrived at the scene and drove the unconscious man to Nyakibale Hospital for medical attention.

A case of attempted murder was registered at Kebison Police Station. A team led by Brian Ampaire, the Rukungiri district Police commander, visited the scene and documented it.

“Statements were recorded from key witnesses, exhibits to wit two handkerchiefs and two suspected USB cables were recovered and the motor vehicle registration number UA 527BH belonging to the victim was removed from the crime scene and driven to Rukungiri Police Station for further examination and analysis,” said Maate.

He said efforts of tracing, identifying and arresting whoever was/were behind the incident are ongoing.

Twinomuhangi contested in the NRM primaries for the district chairperson ticket but lost to Andrewson Charles Katebire, who is the official NRM flagbearer.
