KAMPALA - Former Western Region Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) deputy President and businessman Patrick Baguma Ateenyi is dead.
59-year-old Baguma served as FDC vice president alongside Alice Alaso Asianut, Joyce Sebugwawo and Reagan Okumu from 2015 to 2021.
Baguma died following a fatal crash with a Sino-truck on the Entebbe-Expressway on Friday night.
His brother Daniel Murungi confirmed the accident and said the family will be holding prayers for him at Church of The Resurrection, Bugolobi, Church of Uganda, at 2:00 pm on Saturday.
“We have lost Baguma. He was involved in a serious fatal accident on Friday, July 19, 2025, after his car rammed into a Sino-truck along Entebbe Expressway as he was heading to his home in Bwebajja along Entebbe road. It's hard to tell what happened before the crash since he was travelling alone,” Murungi said.
Murungi said the incident happened at around 8:00 pm, just after the Busega toll station.
“I was driving along the old Entebbe road, and when I tried to call his number, police picked it up and they told me the person whose number I had called had died and his body was in the mortuary,” he stated.
The deceased worked at New Vision from 1990 in the accounts department. When he left New Vision, he started a company called Fire Control and Safety Ltd, which he has been running to date.
The deceased was married to Sarah Baguma, mother of his children. He was also an old boy of Kabalega Secondary School Old Boys Association (KASSOBA).
FDC eulogises Baguma
Harold Kaija, the acting secretary general of the People's Front for Freedom (PFF), who worked with the deceased in FDC described him as a dedicated and honest person.
“We worked with him in the FDC when he was Deputy President. I must say he was a good man, straight forward, he didn’t have any form of intrigue and was straight forward. If he was into something, he did it committedly. He was soft-spoken and not very ambitious to cause intrigue. He was very social and would call to check on you,” he said.
Kaija said recently that Baguma sent someone very senior to join the PFF party. “I actually had intended to call him and see whether he could join us even though he was more into private business after he lost the 2016 race for the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA),” he added.
Baguma's burial is scheduled for Monday in Hoima.
