Detectives have arrested eight security guards over the theft of a television set from Tororo Magistrates Court after police tracking dogs allegedly led investigators to their quarters.

The arrests have since raised fresh concerns over security at government installations, particularly facilities under round-the-clock private guard protection.

Police said the television, a Hisense screen valued at about sh1.4 million, disappeared during the night of June 15 and June 16 from outside the court registry where it had been mounted.

The theft was discovered on Tuesday morning when court clerk Samuel Otai reported for duty. According to investigators, Otai found broken plastic pieces scattered near the mounting area before realising that the television had been removed.

A police scene-of-crime team, detectives and a canine unit were dispatched to the court premises shortly after the theft was reported.

Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson Johnson Moses Mugwe said the sniffer dog tracked a scent from the scene to houses occupied by guards attached to Wolves Security Company, prompting the arrest of eight guards to assist with investigations.

The suspects have been identified as Joseph Oyuki, Shippley Luka, Rashid Otori, Joshua Ochieng, Jerome Etyang, John Kajede Ongoye, Stephen Oluka and Joseph Esuku.

Investigators are examining whether the theft involved negligence, collusion or an organised plan targeting government property.

Police said forensic examinations are continuing while detectives record statements from court staff and the security guards.
