Police detectives are piecing together the circumstances that forced an officer to shoot a wanted assault suspect in the leg after he allegedly attacked officers who had gone to arrest him at his home in Tororo district.
The incident occurred in Nyeminyem Village, Papakoli Parish, Molo subcounty, where officers from Molo Police Station had gone to execute what police described as a lawful arrest.
According to Bukedi South Regional Police spokesperson Johnson Moses Mugwe, officers were pursuing Robert Onderi, who was wanted in connection with an assault case already under investigation.
Police said that when officers knocked on Onderi's door early Tuesday morning, the suspect allegedly emerged wielding a heavy wooden club before striking Cpl. Bright Colline on the neck and chest.
The attack reportedly forced another officer to fire a warning shot into the air in an attempt to subdue the suspect.
When the suspect allegedly continued advancing and resisting arrest, police fired another shot, hitting him in the left foot before taking him into custody.
Onderi was later treated at Tororo Police Health Centre III.
The injured police officer also received medical attention as detectives opened a separate case of assaulting police officers on duty.
Preliminary investigations indicate that Onderi had previously been reported to police in connection with assault-related offences. Investigators are also looking into information suggesting that Onderi has had a history of drug abuse, although this was yet to be established by press time.
Police have recorded statements from the officers who participated in the operation, as inquiries continue into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
