Eight arrested as police recover stolen cash, motorcycles and weapon

Eight suspected members of an aggravated robbery syndicate have been arrested after an intelligence-led operation in the Kampala Metropolitan Policing (KMP) area and neighbouring districts.
KMP deputy spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said in a statement issued on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, that the operation targeting criminal elements suspected of planning a series of robberies followed credible intelligence received on July 31, 2026, indicating that the suspects were preparing to carry out the crimes.

He revealed that the suspects have since confessed to participating in a robbery that occurred on July 27, 2026, in Ntinda, near the Kisasi Road traffic junction, where they attacked and robbed a victim.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident, identify additional victims, and determine whether the suspects are linked to other reported aggravated robbery cases,” Owoyesigyire added.
He said police recovered two motorcycles believed to have been used in the commission of the robberies, one brand-new panga and sh4 million in cash, which the suspects admitted were proceeds from one of the robberies.
“Investigations are ongoing to establish the suspects' involvement in other robbery incidents within the KMP area. The Uganda Police Force commends members of the public who continue to provide timely information that supports crime prevention. We urge business owners, particularly mobile money and agent banking operators, to remain vigilant, avoid carrying large sums of cash without adequate security arrangements, and promptly report any suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station,” he stated.
While releasing the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025 in April this year, Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba said a total of 196,405 cases were reported to police, compared to 218,715 in 2024, representing a 10.2% reduction.
Of the reported cases, 115,301 were submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, from which 79,291 were taken to court.
Out of the 32 policing regions in Uganda, KMP South registered the highest number of cases with 13,950, followed by Rwizi with 13,416, KMP North with 13,340, North Kyoga with 12,728 and KMP East with 10,388.
At district or divisional level, Wakiso Police Division registered the highest number of cases with 3,177, followed by Luweero Police Station with 3,123, Mukono Police Division with 2,880, Tororo Police Station with 2,831 and Ntungamo Police Station with 2,825.
