Couple arrested after Police, NDA recover govt drugs in Kamuli

Police and National Drug Authority (NDA) officials have recovered human medicines and medical equipment allegedly stolen from different government hospitals in Uganda, following an operation in Kamuli district.
The operation was conducted on September 5, 2026, after police received intelligence about the alleged unlawful possession and suspected sale of government medical supplies in the area.
The items, labelled “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale”, were found hoarded in two rooms at the residence of Kenneth Muduutu, a driver of the Green Label truck that distributes medicines from the National Medical Stores to government hospitals.
The residence is located in Busekiti cell, Kamuli municipality.
During the operation, assorted medicines and medical equipment were recovered, including boxes of Panadol, Septrin, Coartem, normal saline (drip water), new and expired ARVs, tooth-extraction clippers, syringes and other items.

Police spokesperson Samson Lubega said Mudichu had vanished, forcing police to arrest his wife, Lydia Nangobi, 35, to assist with the investigations.
Lubega said preliminary investigations indicate that some of the recovered medicines had expired, adding that the couple had been using the expired ARVs as an additive to their pigs' feed.
Privy sources told New Vision that the couple had for a long time sold the drugs to private clinics in Kamuli district and beyond.
Lubega said police are liaising with relevant agencies to verify, sort and document the recovered items and establish the full chain of accountability.
NDA cautioned government officials against the vice, warning that they risk arrest, and urged anyone with information about the illegal diversion, possession or sale of government medical supplies to report to the nearest police station.
