MASAKA - Masaka ‘serial killer’ Fred Mujulizi (35), aka Qaurish Kamugisha, who confessed to being behind numerous murder cases, has been committed to the High Court.

On Friday, the Masaka Chief Magistrates Court, however, dropped three charges against him related to aggravated trafficking in persons and ritual sacrifice.

The Court, presided over by the Grade 1 Magistrate, Prima Kyomugisha, dropped all related charges against Huzairu Kyambadde(28), the co-accused, after the Director of Public Prosecutions found that he was not linked to the charges preferred against Mujulizi.

Upon arrest, Mujulizi had implicated Kyambadde, of Nkoni in Lwengo district, saying that he was a traditional healer who was interested in the human body organs of the murdered persons.

Reacting to the matter, Mujulizi, who appeared via a Zoom link from Luzira Upper Prisons, said that the court was wrong to drop the charges against Kyambadde.

“I committed these offences with Kyambadde; it's a mistake to set him free,” he said.

However, the court informed Mujulizi that he would raise the matter before the High Court where he was committed.

“We do not have jurisdiction over this matter; you will raise it before the High Court trial,” Magistrate Kymomugisha said.

Prosecution led by the Senior State Attorney Abraham Akandwanaho told the court that inquiries in the murder charges against Mujulizi were complete.

He submitted reports from the DPP discharging Kyambadde.

Court heard that Mujulizi, a resident of Katwadde, on September 28 this year, beheaded a female adult, Natullinda, a resident of Lukaya in Kalungu district and dropped the body parts at different places in Kako and Kyanamukaka in Masaka district.

Prosecution stated that at the murder scene, the accused dropped a note with details of three co-accused, a book and mobile phone on the murder scene that led to their arrest.

He listed the others as: Huzairu Kyambadde and Pastor Baker Mutagumbya.

The trio denied the charges, citing grudges with Mujulizi connected to his money lending business, where he was in possession of their land as collateral.

A resident of Kasaala village in Nyendo Mukungwe Division in Masaka, Mujulizi, who was found in possession of several identities, confessed to the killing of many people, including his father, the late NRA fighter James Mugunga, Kaluroko village LC 1 Chairperson, John Betengyeza in Kiruhura district, who also doubled as the NRM party chairperson and one Itote.

He says he had issues with his late father and several members of his family, whom he also killed.

In his statement, Mujulizi regrets killing people, including his father, and is praying for a lenient sentence to allow him to repent. Mujulizi says he committed the largest number of murders in the greater Masaka region, especially in Masaka rural areas of Buwunga and Kyanamukaka sub-counties.

Other murders, he claims, were committed in Rakai, Kalungu, Lwengo and other areas of the Western region.

Mujulizi says that he kills for ritual and wealth interests.

He recalls that his killings include the gruesome 2013 murders of Pastor Robert Mugambe of the Kyebe Pentecostal Church in Kyotera district and eight members of his family.

Pastor Baker Mutagubya and his wife, Jancinta Nabukera, who were among those earlier arrested, were released on police bond

Mujulizi is said to have borrowed Sh1m from the couple after they deposited part of their land at Kasaala village near his home in Masaka.  He borrowed them on terms that they should pay a monthly interest of Sh200,000.

Mujulizi later implicated them as accomplices in his murder missions for ritual purposes.
