KAMPALA - A businesswoman has been fined sh500,000 by the City Hall Magistrates Court for failing to keep records of a person she employed to drive her motor vehicle.

Annet Phiona Nakafu, 36, was sentenced by Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Nicholas Aisu on Friday after pleading guilty to employing a driver without maintaining the legally required written records.

Court ordered that Nakafu serve four months in prison if she fails to pay the fine.

Prosecution told court that Nakafu committed the offence on April 13, 2025, at about 9:00am in Kalinabiri Zone, Ntinda, Kampala District.

Court heard that Nakafu had employed a person to drive a blue Isuzu motor vehicle, registration number UAT 549F, but failed to keep written records containing the driver’s name, address and driving permit number.

She was charged with failing to keep records of an employee, contrary to Sections 142 and 164(1) of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, Cap 347.

According to the court records, the matter came to light after Nakafu’s vehicle was involved in an accident in which a building was damaged.

The driver reportedly fled the scene, leaving the vehicle, which was subsequently impounded by police.

When Nakafu went to the police to claim her vehicle, she was unable to provide the driver’s details because she had not maintained the required employment records.

Police informed court that the driver had not been traced.

In passing sentence, Aisu considered Nakafu’s guilty plea, remorse and the fact that she had saved court’s time by admitting the offence.

He subsequently fined her Sh500,000, with a default sentence of four months’ imprisonment.
