KAMPALA - Leaders of Parliament’s sectoral and standing committees will be announced at the next sitting of the House, Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has disclosed.
Nabbanja made the announcement on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, while officiating at the opening of a four-day induction retreat for Members of Parliament at Speke Resort Munyonyo.
“We are in the process as NRM (National Resistance Movement) of designating Members of Parliament from our side to leadership positions in Parliament as provided for under Rule 187 and 128 of our Rules of Procedure. The Government Chief Whip will announce the members appointed to those positions at the next sitting,” she said.
Furthermore, the Kakumiro District Woman MP called on MPs across the board to rally behind the NRM’s legislative agenda, arguing that Parliament has a constitutional duty to support the President and the Government in advancing Uganda’s development agenda through laws that promote development, increase household incomes and transform livelihoods.
“I want to request that we work as a team. Recently, the President directed me to coordinate Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), especially the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Works and Transport, Finance, Planning and Economic Development and Internal Affairs, to evacuate 771 Ugandans from South Africa following the escalation of anti-migrant protests. So, either tomorrow or a day after tomorrow, our brothers will be flying in from South Africa,” Nabbanja implored.
Committee membership goes digital
During a recent orientation for MPs on Thursday, May 28, 2026, Charles Lwanga Kiiza, the Director in the Office of the Leader of Government Business, disclosed that four applications had been developed.
He said the applications are accessible via smartphones and require Members to log in using a username.
He added that, unlike in the past, members will now apply for membership to committees and the Parliamentary Commission online.
He noted that each applicant will also have the option of indicating up to three preferred committees.
“Sectoral committee membership is also going to be same on your phones. You are not going to receive phones. We are going to send you this app; you put in your email, whether it is Parliament or Gmail, your name is already populated in the data. So, you go and choose your name. From there, it brings your constituency; then you put in your qualifications. For example, Bachelor of Law, then work experience. Immediately after that, you choose your region,” Lwanga explained.
“With leadership, you have to upload a Curriculum Vitae and also your application of a minimum of one page….It is also the same with the application for being a parliamentary commissioner,” he emphasised.
