A powerful atmosphere of gratitude and celebration filled the air at the Ntugamo District Headquarters today, as hundreds gathered for a thanksgiving and birthday ceremony in honour of the First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Kataaha Museveni.
The event, marking her 78th birthday, doubled as a national praise ceremony following her recent triumph over an illness that had sidelined her from public life for months.
A Diocese in praise
The thanksgiving service was led by the Bishop of South Ankole Diocese, Rt. Rev. Nathan Ahimbisibwe, who praised God for preserving the First Lady’s life.
In a touching moment that electrified the congregation, Bishop Ahimbisibwe led the entire gathering in a spirited rendition of the “Happy Birthday” song, celebrating both her life and her recovery.
The joyous event brought together local leaders, clergy, and citizens united in relief.
Breaking the silence
The celebrations follow months of intense public speculation regarding the First Lady’s health. The silence was officially broken on her birthday, June 24, when President Yoweri Museveni revealed that she had survived a severe health crisis that struck on March 21, 2026.
The President credited her survival to God and the tireless efforts of medical doctors, famously describing the affliction as an attack by “Sitaane” (Satan).
Messages of faith, gratitude
Taking to her official X (formerly Twitter) account on Thursday, June 25, the First Lady expressed her profound gratitude to the nation, putting an end to the rumours with a message deeply rooted in her Christian faith.
“It’s me, Janet Museveni. It is a confirmation that the God I talk about is a living God. He is not a myth, He lives! I must therefore thank Uganda, beginning with Mzee (President Museveni), who has prayed with the whole nation,” she wrote.
She added, “Thank you all for coming out publicly to pray for me. Thank you for all those continuous prayers and also for the kind birthday wishes. Thank you for letting me know just how much I am loved.”
Echoing her mother’s spiritual resilience, her daughter, Natasha Museveni Karugire, also took to X to share a powerful testimony: “I know the Storm Master. His name is Jesus. He lives! And He cares about His children.”
National relief
The news of her recovery has sparked an outpouring of warmth and relief from across the country’s political and cultural spectrum.
High-profile figures, including various Members of Parliament and celebrated musician Eddy Kenzo, have flooded social media with prayers and messages of solidarity, welcoming back the “Mother of the Nation.”
