A 24-year-old clinical officer who recently confessed to murder in Kampala has been transferred back to Kabale to face prosecution.
Clinton Mwesiime, also a volunteer at Hamurwa Health Centre 1V in Rubanda district in Kigezi region, western Uganda, was on Wednesday escorted by detectives from Jinja Road Police Station.
He had been earlier arrested after he confessed publicly during a church service in Nakawa, a city suburb, to having stabbed his girlfriend to death while in a guest house, before fleeing to Kampala.
The confession stunned Christians and the clergy, who quietly contacted Jinja Road Police, who arrived and arrested the suspect after the church service.
Elly Maate, the Kigezi region police spokesperson, confirmed that Mwesiime, who hails from Mitooma district, also in western Uganda, was transferred back to Kabale.
“We have him here and upon completion of inquiries, he will be produced in court to answer charges accordingly,” he said in a statement issued on Thursday.
According to Maate, the health worker is said to have confessed to murdering 45-year-old Leonada Kobusingye, a resident of Ahataba village, Shebeya parish, Hamurwa sub-county in Rubanda district.
Maate said the police were still interrogating the suspect to establish the exact motive, but facts indicated that on July 30, 2025, Kobusingye's body was found abandoned in a room where the couple had booked to stay in the previous night.
According to Kabale Police records, the case unfolded on the night of July 29, 2025, at Cheers Pub and Accommodation in Kabale town, at around 9:45pm.
It is said the lodge attendant, a one Immaculate Tumwehe, received two clients — a man and a woman — who identified themselves with pseudo names, Allen Orishaba (with mobile number 0770819133) and Julius Andy (0708122919).
They allegedly requested accommodation and were given Room 7.
“The following morning [July 30] at about 9:51am, Tumwehe entered the room to clean it and found a gruesome scene: the woman lying lifeless in a pool of blood on the bed, with four sharp stab wounds to her chest and stomach. A bloodied knife was abandoned by her left side,” the Police report stated.
Tumwehe immediately alerted her manager, Anaclet Niwagaba, who reported the murder to Kabale Police Station.
Crime scene investigators collected several items from the room, including a knife, a half-litre of Rwenzori mineral water bottle containing a yellow liquid, empty bottles of Minute Maid and Fanta, unused HIV/syphilis testing kits, a syringe, a green dress, a black half-slip and a pair of women’s open shoes.
After several days of waiting, according to the Police, the dead woman’s relatives showed up and identified the body on Monday this week and were allowed to take it for burial.
“We are trying to establish the suspect’s motive, and I cannot tell when he will likely to be ready for court. But whether he had a genuine reason or not, this was uncalled for," said Maate.
“And that is why I want to ask our people that if they have any grievances of any kind, they should resort to lawful methods of handling them other than taking the law in their hands."
In a picture taken of him on arrival at Kabale, Mwesiime still looked clean, but worried. He was wearing jeans, a maroon T-shirt and a jacket.
