A 36-year-old Chinese national, Cheng Yi Wei, has been charged with theft of sh210m belonging to fellow Chinese national Gong Zheng Tao.
The accused, described as a Chinese tourist residing in Matugga-Sanga Village in Wakiso District, appeared before the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate's Court, where the charge was read to him by Senior Principal Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiiko.
Wei denied the charge and was subsequently remanded to Luzira Prison until November 11, 2026, when he will re-appear for further court proceedings.
According to the charge sheet, Wei is accused of stealing sh210m from Tao on October 22 and 23, 2026, at King Fahad Plaza in Kampala Central Division, Kampala District.
Prosecution alleges that the complainant (Tao) intended to exchange Ugandan shillings for United States dollars and contacted the accused (Wei), who allegedly offered to facilitate the currency exchange.
It is alleged that the complainant handed over money to the accused on the two occasions for conversion into US dollars. However, the complainant reportedly did not receive the agreed foreign currency.
Tao is a 34-year-old Chinese national who reportedly operates a wholesale business dealing in bed covers.
The accused is charged with theft contrary to Sections 237(1) and 244 of the Penal Code Act, Cap. 128.
If convicted, Wei faces a maximum sentence of 10 years' imprisonment under Section 244 of the Penal Code Act.
