Camera footage gives police fresh lead in Kampala children murder probe

Police officers investigating the stabbing of five children, leaving two of them dead in Bunga, Kampala, have obtained fresh evidence from video footage captured around the scene as detectives intensify efforts to establish what triggered the attack.
Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Racheal Kawala said investigators revisited the scene on August 21 and reviewed sensitive video footage from the area, which provided evidence that could help in their investigation.
“We are still investigating that incident in which a mother allegedly stabbed her five children, killing two and injuring three, before attempting to take her own life by stabbing herself,” Kawala said.
She said detectives had also recorded statements from neighbours and first responders, who were at the scene shortly after the incident.
Namayo is currently admitted at Mulago National Referral Hospital under police guard after she allegedly attacked her five children at their home in Kalungu-Bunga in Makindye Division.
The two children who died were identified as Khadija Daisy Traore, 14, and Dalisa Mariam Traore, 10. Their bodies were taken to Mulago city mortuary, from where they were subjected to a postmortem examination before they were handed over to their father. They were buried on August 21 at Kololo Muslim Cemetery.
Kawala said two of the surviving children, aged 13 and 10, were discharged from the hospital on August 22, while another victim remains admitted and is receiving treatment in a stable condition.
"Namayo also remains hospitalised and is reported to be in a stable and improving condition," Kawala said.
According to Kawala, the suspect attributed the incident to alleged prolonged domestic violence between herself and her husband.
The husband also recorded a statement in which he confirmed that there had been domestic violence between the couple.
Police have also subjected Namayo to a mental health assessment as part of the investigation. The assessment reportedly found her mentally stable and capable of understanding her actions.
Kawala said the investigating team would return to the suspect if further information was required.
“She responded positively, and the investigating team will still go back and get information, if necessary,” she said.
