Bus carrying pupils crashes in Kapchorwa — here is what we know

 BUS CRASH 

A bus carrying pupils crashed in Kapchorwa district on Thursday evening, with an unspecified number of the occupants feared dead and others injured.

Police confirmed that the deadly crash happened at a spot in Chekwatit village, Kimawa parish in Kawowo sub-county.

It occured at around 8pm Ugandan time.

The bus with the registration number UA 108BQ was transporting pupils of King David Junior School, Ndejje, Police added.

It is understood they were destined for a field trip although the destination was not immediately clear.

"Police and other emergency responders are at the scene carrying out rescue operations and establishing the number of casualties and injured persons. At this stage, the exact number of fatalities and injuries has not yet been confirmed," the Directorate of Traffic and Road Safety spokesperson, Michael Kananura, said in a statement on social media platform X.

"More information will be provided as soon as it becomes available."

Pictures posted on social media platforms showed what was believed to be the ill-fated bus before the crash, assumedly hours before, and then of the mangled remains of the vehicle at the scene of the crash.
