Always use registered engineers, Ugandans told

As engineers gear up to celebrate their day, Ugandans have been urged to rely on registered engineers for their construction projects.
While addressing the media on Wednesday, February 19, at the Uganda Engineers Registration Board (ERB) offices in Kyambogo, Kampala, Eng. Henry Alinaitwe Mwanaki, the ERB chairperson noted that many Ugandans neglect to hire qualified engineers, yet hold them responsible when building failures or other project issues arise.
“Many Ugandans do not want to use registered engineers. When you hear about buildings collapsing, people will start blaming the engineers yet it is your fault. Most of the Ugandans do not even use engineers, they only use some people that claim to be engineers because they have gone through the practice but are not engineers,” Alinaitwe said.
He revealed that on March 4, they will be celebrating World Engineering Day which will be themed “Shaping our sustainable future through Engineering”.
He added that in the run-up to the day, they will hold an Engineers run and sports gala at Kyambogo sports ground on March 2, NextGen Engineers Webinar on March 3, and the taking of the oath by newly registered engineers on March 5.
Alinaitwe also cautioned foreign engineers against operating in Uganda without operating licences.
“Any foreign engineers operating in any part of the country should come and register with us four months on arrival. Those that won’t come and register with us, we are working with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the law will act upon you or be deported back to your home countries,” Alinaitwe said.
