60 suspected criminals arrested in Kampala

Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP), in coordination with other security agencies have arrested 60 suspects during disruptive operations targeting criminal hideouts and black spots in a bid to curb street crime, house break-ins, robberies, and drug-related offences.

Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy KMP spokesperson, in a statement, said that on the nights of July 7 and 8, 2026, coordinated operations were conducted in Kiwempe and Kibati (Kansanga) within Makindye Division, Mutungo Zone 1 (Kunnya) in Nakawa Division, as well as in Bajjo and Ntinda within Seeta, Mukono District.

“In Kabalagala Police Division, police arrested 30 suspects from a location suspected to be used for planning criminal activities following persistent complaints of house break-ins and simple robberies in Kiwempe, Kibati, and the surrounding areas. The suspects were charged with being a public nuisance and are undergoing screening to separate innocent persons from those linked to criminal activities,” Owoyesigyire said.

In Mukono District, Owoyesigyire said police arrested 22 suspects from identified criminal black spots in Bajjo and Ntinda villages.

“Some of the suspects were found in possession of suspected opium and were charged accordingly. Preliminary findings indicate that some of the suspects have been linked to phone snatching, robberies, and drug abuse,” he noted.

In a separate operation in Mutungo Zone 1 (Kunnya), Nakawa Division, Owoyesigyire revealed that Jinja Road police arrested eight male suspects from known criminal hideouts associated with drug abuse and robbery. The suspects remain in custody pending prosecution.

“Kampala Metropolitan Police remain committed to sustaining disruptive operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks, improving public safety, and enhancing security across the metropolitan area. We urge members of the public to continue sharing timely and credible information to support crime prevention and law enforcement efforts,” he added.

Crime statistics

While releasing the Uganda Police Force Annual Crime Report 2025 in April this year, the Inspector General of Police, Abas Byakagaba, said a total of 196,405 cases were reported to the police compared to 218,715 cases reported in 2024. Out of the reported cases, 115,301 were submitted to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, from which 79,291 were taken to Court.

Out of the 32 policing regions in Uganda, Kampala Metropolitan Police South registered the highest number of cases (13,950), followed by Rwizi with 13,416 cases. Kampala Metropolitan Police North followed with13,340 cases, North Kyoga had 12,728 cases, while Kampala Metropolitan Police East registered 10,388 cases. At the district/divisional level, Wakiso Police Division registered the highest number of cases (3,177), followed by Luweero Police Station with 3,123 cases. Mukono Police Division followed with 2,880 cases, Tororo Police Station registered 2,831 cases, while Ntungamo Police Station had 2,825 cases.
