Police in Nakaseke have arrested 22 people after they were found travelling in a taxi carrying suspected wildlife products and hunting equipment.
The suspects were intercepted on August 17, 2026, during an intelligence-led motorised patrol and snap checkpoint mounted at Mijumwa trading centre at about 11:00 pm.
Savannah Regional Police spokesperson Sam Twineamazima said the suspects were travelling in a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K, when police stopped and searched the vehicle.
“The vehicle was conveying hunting equipment, suspected wildlife products and 22 occupants,” Twineamazima said.

Police recovered hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, roots and leaves of unknown species, smoked and fresh suspected wild meat, three pairs of oribi horns, locally known as empeewo, five bushbuck (engabi) and porcupine quills (Namunungu).
Twineamazima said all the recovered items were photographed, documented and impounded as exhibits pending expert examination.
A case of unlawful possession of wildlife species has been opened, while all 22 occupants were arrested and detained at Nakaseke Police Station.
Police said statements have been recorded from the suspects to guide further investigations, with the suspects expected to be transferred to specialist authorities for further action under the Wildlife Act.
Twineamazima said the operation was part of ongoing efforts to crack down on illegal hunting and wildlife trafficking in the Savannah region.
He urged members of the public with information about illegal hunting, possession or trafficking of wildlife products to report to the nearest police station.
“Police in Nakaseke remain committed to protecting wildlife and enforcing conservation laws,” he said.
Police said further details will be released as investigations continue.
