Veteran rapper and hip hop culture enthusiast Silas Babaluku Balabyekubo, popularly known as Babaluku, on Thursday, May 9, stated that it is hip hop's time to shine in Uganda.
Speaking at fellow rapper Feffe Bussi's press conference ahead of his HipHop ku Nalubaale concert, at Jahazi Pier in Munyonyo, Babaluku said before the likes of Feffe Bussi and a host of several other younger rappers came about, his generation struggled a lot to see the genre gain traction.
"We struggled a lot trying to get the attention of radio stations to play our music. Most of the promoters here never picked interest in hip hop concerts, back in the day, until recently. For Feffe Bussi, therefore, to be holding such a concert, now, I believe it is time for the genre to shine,"Babaluku said.
Feffe Bussi re-echoed Babaluku's thoughts, saying: "For a long time, the hip hop community in Uganda has been sidelined, mounting most of the support to other genres of music. With my upcoming concert, I want to shine a spotlight on hip hop, celebrate the foundation and where we are, today,"
The Bataka Underground veteran also called upon fellow rappers to use this time to unite and support each other because, "our genre is still marginalised, despite being such a force. Share love amongst yourselves because it costs nothing."
Babaluku also enchanted journalists and guests at the presser with a short but punchy freestyle rap, reminding many about why he rightly fits the reverence he has commanded over time.
Feffe Bussi will be holding his maiden concert at Jahazi Pier in Munyonyo, Kampala on May 18, sponsored by Bukedde TV.
