The latest Uganda Police Force report has indicated that most fatal road accidents in 2023 happened over the weekend.

It said there were more fatal crashes (719) registered on Sundays than any other day of the week, followed by Saturdays (650) and Mondays (608).

The 2023 Annual Traffic Performance Report was released by the Police on May 17, 2024.

According to an observational study on speeding by Makerere University School of Public Health in Kampala City, speeding was high on Sundays (18%), Saturdays (18%) and Mondays (17%), the report said.

“This may explain why there are more fatal crashes reported on these days,” it said.

Police also said since Saturday and Monday are the days when there are fewer vehicles and no congestion, an increase in the number of fatal crashes implies that the drivers end up speeding.

The Police said there is a need to enhance speed enforcement during the identified days to force drivers to comply with speed limits.

This report is an annual publication compiled by the Police, providing the statistical summary of road traffic crashes reported from January 1 to December 31, 2023.

Collisions with pedestrians made up 40% of all fatal crashes while head-on collisions constituted 15%.

“This means that more than half of all fatal collisions involved vehicles hitting pedestrians and vehicles hitting each other head-to-head. The percentages of fatal crashes involving sideswipes and rear-end collisions were 11% and 10%, respectively,” the report said.

It also said angle collisions accounted for 6% whereas single-vehicle crashes were 5%.
