The Vicar General of Kampala, Msgr Vincent Rogers Mukasa Kabuye, has urged learners to desist from destructive behaviour, including engaging in early marriages while still in school, if they want to excel in academics.
Speaking during a thanksgiving mass at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Namugongo on October 2, Kabuye told learners to use the Holy Spirit and the 10 Commandments as their Google Maps to guide their lives.
“These days, when you are going somewhere, you use Google Maps to show you the right way. Sometimes you can find yourself in a situation and a voice will tell you to go to a witchdoctor, steal, fight, or engage in coupling at an early age at school. Such are not good solutions. Let the Holy Spirit and the 10 Commandments be your Google Maps to guide you in your academics and in your daily life,” Kabuye urged learners during his sermon.

Best students get school fees refund
The thanksgiving mass was organised to thank God for the outstanding performance achieved by Namugongo in the 2025 final exams in Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE), Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) and Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE).
The headteacher Uganda Martyrs Secondary School, Namugongo, Rev. Fr. Dr. Henry Kasasa, said, “Our school was ranked number one in the country in UCE, UACE 2025 results. At Uganda Martyrs Nursery and Primary School Namugongo, our pioneer PLE 2025 candidates excelled with 97 percent First Grade scores.”
According to Kasasa, learners who excel at Uganda Martyrs Nursery and Primary School Namugongo enjoy a direct entry opportunity to Senior One at Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Namugongo.
“Today we are proud to recognise our outstanding performers at the UACE 2025. These are 36 students who scored the maximum 20 points. Today, they are taking back home their 3rd term 2025 school fees refund,” Kasasa said, urging the rest of the student community to borrow a leaf from the 2025 stars.
Kasasa said the school supports outstanding performance and character through the Uganda Martyrs Secondary School Namugongo meritorious award.
“This award offers a full bursary at A-level to each student who scores the maximum As at UCE. It offers a full bursary to each student who scores 20 points at the end of each term at A-Level. The award offers the headteacher’s pocket money to students who score an average of 90 percent in monthly assessments,” Kasasa said.

The refund is not only to encourage other students to work hard but also to help these top performers to start university comfortably, Kasasa said. Each student was refunded sh2.25m with a certificate of excellence in performance.
Parents’ representative and chairman parents’ committee, Class of 2025, Fred Mamuko Keta, thanked the school for maintaining the academic bar high over the years. He said refunding school fees was not only motivating but also inspiring to other children to work hard.
During the thanksgiving mass, over 200 students from both secondary and primary sections received first holy communion, confirmation and final commitment.
