Weekly market wrap: Shares worth sh1.17 b exchanged hands

New Vision (NVL) traded sh155,345 ($41) from 1,070 shares, and Uganda Clays (UCL) closed the week with sh7,700 ($2) from 1,000 shares.

The USE All Share Index (ALSI) gained 4.02% to close at 2,410.78, while the C11, Crested Capital's index of local companies, rose 1.03% to 215.78.

KAMPALA - Total turnover on the Uganda Securities Exchange (USE) grew to sh1.17b ($309,295) during the week ending September 4, up from sh954.89m ($253,738) traded the previous week.

Volumes, however, were only marginally higher, with 10,959,712 shares changing hands compared to 10,401,801 shares the week before, according to market data from Crested Capital.

Umeme dealt shs421.7m ($111,735) from 6,693,964 shares. MTN Uganda moved sh383.43m ($101,590) from 881,391 shares, while Stanbic Holdings traded sh303.87m ($80,509) from 3,009,184 shares.

Airtel Uganda closed out the top four, trading sh49.73m ($13,175) from 281,825 shares. Bank of Baroda dealt sh5.04m ($1,335) from 77,075 shares (15,415 a day), and Quality Chemical Industries Limited (QCIL) moved sh2.24m ($593) from 14,000 shares.

British American Tobacco (BATU) returned to the market for the first time since May, exchanging 103 shares worth sh1.18m ($314).

Price movements

Umeme and Stanbic stock price held steady through the week, closing at sh63 and sh101 respectively.

NIC Holdings posted the biggest gain, rising 9.68% to sh10.20, followed by UCL, up 8.45% to sh7.70. Airtel climbed 3.37% to a new all time high of Shs177, BOBU added 3.13% to sh66, and BATU edged up 0.88% to sh11,500.

On the losing side, NVL dropped 2.03% to sh145, while QCIL slipped 0.48% to sh160.
