KAMPALA - Listed telecom firm MTN Uganda has closed the first six months of 2026 with a profit after tax of sh367.5b.

The growth represents a 37.7% increase from sh266.9b in the same period last year. The company's board has approved a quarterly interim dividend of sh8.75 per share to shareholders, translating to sh195.9b for shareholders.

Combined with the dividend declared in the first quarter, total payouts for the half year now stand at sh17.25 per share, or sh386.2b.

According to the interim results released to the Uganda Securities Exchange, total revenue for the six months to June 2026 grew by 9.7% to sh1.9 trillion, up from sh1.7 trillion in the corresponding period of 2025.

Service revenue, which strips out device and SIM card sales, rose by 9.4% to sh1.87 trillion. Data was the standout performer, with revenue from that segment growing 15.6% to sh566.8b.

The company said data growth was supported by a bigger subscriber base and rising smartphone use.

Fintech revenue, which covers MTN's mobile money business and its Xtratime airtime advance service, increased by 10.7% to sh580.6b. Mobile money alone brought in sh568b, up 10.8%.

Transaction volumes across the platform rose 9.5% to 2.6 billion, while the value of those transactions jumped 26.8% to sh113.3 trillion.

Voice revenue grew more modestly, up 1.8% to sh640.4b, a performance MTN attributed to the resilience of its customer base in the face of the new Mobile Termination Rate introduced earlier this year.
