Alex Isabirye is set to return to URA FC as head coach.

A few days after URA named Robert Mukasa as interim head coach to replace David Obua, New Vision Sport has learnt that Isabirye will now take over the club coaching duties in the coming days.

Although details about the length of his deal are still unknown, reports indicate that former URA chairman James Kizza who is in charge of Rusal Sports Management that represents Isabirye, played a part in negotiations.

Having won five Uganda Cup trophies, three of those all against Vipers, as well as three league titles, it is no wonder URA have turned to Isabirye.

Isabirye's first real taste of management came as an assistant to Moses Basena at URA during the 2009/10 season before the fledgling coach became head coach in February 2010.

Being handed the reins to oversee a big club like URA at that time came as a surprise to many but Isabirye’s leadership skills came to the fore as a player winning league titles with SC Villa (2002, 2003 and 2004) and with URA in 2009.

In his first full season at URA, he didn’t disappoint as he guided them to the 2010/11 league title and finished runners-up in the Uganda Cup after losing the final to Simba.

In the 2011/2012 season, he guided URA to the Uganda Cup trophy before he switched to join the defunct SC Victoria University where he won them to the knockout competition in the following season.

Isabirye's last assignment was at Express this year before he resigned over poor working conditions.

In the 20 games Obua was in charge since November last year, he won eight, drew four and lost eight.

Upon his appointment, Obua’s ambition was to ensure his side played free-flowing football reminiscent of his playing days but things didn't pan out

Obua wanted his players to play from the back with short crisp passes but the need for more time to transition cost him the job.

Several rifts emerged with some of the senior players disillusioned with the playing time while some members of Obua’s backroom staff including Fred Muhumuza (second assistant coach), Robert Mukasa (third assistant coach), Byron Okuba (strength and conditioning), and Ilic Milos (fitness coach) left the club.

Mukasa and Milos were later reinstated after Obua’s departure.
