Orthodox Christians on Sunday (March 31) celebrated the second Sunday of Lent on which they also commemorated St Gregory Palamas, who is considered to be one of the greatest Saints in the Orthodox Church.

In Uganda, the main celebrations took place at St. Nicholas Cathedral Namungoona, in Rubaga Division. The Divine Liturgy was presided over by the church’s assistant parish priest, Fr. Sterios Kasule, who spoke highly of Saint Gregory.

He said St Gregory (who was Archbishop of Thessaloniki in Greece between 1347 and 1359) was a great Orthodox monk and theologian who described and clearly explained God’s vision in the life of Christians, that is, to know him, to experience him, to share his life and to become one with him.

In his latter remarks, Kasule put it to the Orthodox Christians to use the Lenten season to renew their commitment to the faith.

“Lent is a season that allows us to examine ourselves given our Christian commitments. Let’s use the season to free ourselves from the bondage of sin. We should not let ourselves be deceitful, hateful, sinful, and envious Christians. Let’s make every effort to return to God and be in the right relationship with Him. Let’s endeavor to be virtuous in every aspect of our life,” said Fr Kasule.

The Divine Liturgy was also concelebrated by other Orthodox clerics, including Fr Nicholas Bayego and Fr Emmanuel Kiwanuka.
