Students of St. Peter's SS Namwendwa in the Kamuli district have embarked on harnessing the use of plastic. This is done by waste bottles being tied to a support pole to provide artificial irrigation.
The school's management says this will enable plants to grow even when there is no rain and that it is another way of improving the environment.
The other benefit of using waste plastic bottles is that this will ensure that the environment will be protected from degradation because the plastic is being collected. By freeing the environment of waste plastic, the growth of green nature will be supported.
"We did this basically to prevent unrecycled plastics and also to improve on the garbage disposal, which is key to creating a sustainable environment," some of the students said.
This comes at a time when various parts of the country are experiencing dry weather conditions that can’t sustain the growth of green vegetation.
The management says if this project is adopted by every school, the problem of climate change could be mitigated.
