Uganda Queen Cranes brightened their semifinal hopes in women’s football at the African Games with a 2-0 win over fellow CECAFA members Ethiopia on Tuesday, March 12, to move to second place on four points in Group A.

Captain Catherine Nagadya and Docus Lwalima’s goals in the first half are what got the job done for the Cranes.

This was their first win in this tournament having settled for a 1-1 all-draw on Saturday in their opening group match.

The other match played on Tuesday saw hosts Ghana beat Tanzania 2-1 to become the first side to qualify for the semifinals after gathering six points from their opening two matches.

The group games will climax on Friday with Uganda taking on already qualified Ghana whereas Tanzania will face Ethiopia in another CECAFA derby.

As things stand, Uganda needs to avoid defeat against Ghana to qualify for the semifinals.

On the other hand, Tanzania is already eliminated but Ethiopia has a slim chance to go through should they beat Tanzania with a big goal margin and hope Ghana does the same for them against Uganda.

Sheryl Botes, the Queen Cranes tactician revealed that she anticipates a tough game from the Black Princesses of Ghana, but has worked out a better plan of stopping them.

“I am proud of the performance from the girls so far in the two games, now we have a big test against Ghana, they are such a forceful side to play against, have a powerful number eight and we have to find a way of containing her,” she said.

“But all in all, I know what to do, we will change the approach from the one we applied against Ethiopia and Tanzania to ensure that we go through,” said Botes.
