Uganda Queen Cranes were made to pay for switching off in the closing stages of the match by Tanzania who scored a late equaliser in the 90th minute to force a 1-1 stalemate in their All-Africa Games opening match on Saturday evening.

Former Kampala Queens' forward Margaret Kunihira gave Uganda a 40th-minute deserved lead after a well-laid pass from Zaina Nandede in a game played in Cape Coast stadium in Ghana.

Before Kunihira's opener, Queen Cranes had already threatened to score through Catherine Nagadya who found herself in good scoring spaces only to fire wide and on the other occasions was flagged offside.

Going into the break with this slim lead, head coach Sheryl Botes made some changes in the second half to boost her attack by introducing Juliet Nalukenge and Shamirah Nalugya for Catherine Nagadya and Krusum Namutebi respectively.

The new players tried to get a second goal for Uganda but were denied by the excellent Tanzanian defence which was not ready to make the same mistake as in the first half when they allowed Kunihira to punish them.

As the game progressed, Tanzania kept growing in confidence, and in the 90th minute, Aisha Juma got them an equaliser which denied Uganda a winning start.

Tanzania nearly won it in stoppage time had Christer Bahera kept her composure when she found herself on one with Queen Cranes' goalkeeper Sharon Kaidu only to fire her efforts wide.

Uganda will face Ethiopia next on Tuesday before completing their group stage games against hosts Ghana on Friday.
