Spanish journalist Sadurni Carrasck Sumaya died in a road accident.

Spanish journalist Sadurni Carrasck Sumaya who was killed alongside Thomas Mugisha in a fatal accident at Chopelwo valley in Kiryandongo district has been hailed for her striking coverage across East Africa.

Mugisha and Sumaya were killed on the spot after their car, a RAV4 registration number UAS 597U was involved in a head-on collision with a Fuso truck registration number UAL 192U on Monday, March 7, 2021.

International Press Association of Uganda said, “we are mourning the loss of our beautiful, kind and talented sister, Sumy Sadurni, who died in a road accident on Monday night. She was a wonderful friend, a generous colleague and a brilliantly talented photographer. Our condolences to all of the many people who loved her.”

Foreign Press Association Africa said, “We join you and the rest of our colleagues in celebrating the life of our departed colleague, Sumy Sadurni. May her soul rest in eternal peace.”

Catherine Byaruhanga of BBC said, “my better half. You loved me so deeply, so intentionally. What a privilege to have experienced such love. A friendship I’ll carry forever. Every person you photographed felt your love. A journalist and feminist like no other. Rest well my beauty. I love you.”

Nicholas Opiyo said, “through her lens, Sumy told the stories of forgotten people in our society (slum dwellers, amateur boxers, brewers of local gin, etc.), oppressed minorities (sex workers, fisherfolks, among others). She braved tear gas to capture stories of human rights violations. RIP”

Tabea Guenzler said “oh my God, I am shocked to learn about her passing! There are no words. Such a talented woman. And I have been admiring her work and looking up to her photography skills for more than two years since I first came to Uganda for a visit.”

Ireland Embassy in Uganda said, “our sincere condolences to the family of Sumy Sadurni, and to her colleagues and friends at the International Press Association of Uganda.”

Stella Nyanzi said, “rest in power, oh beautiful bold feminist goddess Sumy Sadurni. You fought for us - underdogs in Uganda - with your camera and photography that exposed our plight and oppression under Museveni’s dictatorship. Thank you for freely photographing me in defiant resistance action!”

Katie G. Nelson, a journalist said Sadurni used photography as a weapon to fight for gender equality and brought many women into the business through trainings and advocacy in Uganda. She was a feminist, fierce leader, and dear friend.

Ali Bukeni popularly known as Nubian Li of the National Unity Platform said, “oh what a tragedy! Am so saddened to learn of the death of a dear friend Sumy Sadurni who passed away after being involved in a fatal car accident. She was a brave international journalist who helped to show the world of the human rights violations in Uganda.”

Nicholas Bamulanzeki said, “I can’t believe that you are gone Sadurni, you were full of life and very outgoing… until we meet again, may your soul rest in eternal peace.”
 
Amanda Sperber an international journalist said, “Sumy Sadurni was a journalist who really saw and deeply respected the people and places she photographed in Uganda. I am so saddened to learn that she died in a road accident. I hope reporters around the world will be inspired by her example.”

International Women's Media Foundation said, “we are heartbroken to learn of the passing of Sumy Sadurni, a talented photographer and past fellow of our African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative. Sumy courageously reported on human rights and the refugee crisis in Uganda. We send our deepest condolences to her loved ones.”
