Busia Police probe death of businessman at Kampala hospital

Police in Busia District have opened an inquiry into the death of a 46-year-old businessman at a private health facility in Old Kampala, after his relatives raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding his death.

The deceased was identified as Ali Monday, a businessman and resident of Buchicha C Village, Sikuda sub-county, Busia District.

According to police, Monday first travelled to Jinja after falling sick, before he was taken to Mulago Referral Hospital for treatment.

His condition reportedly worsened while at Mulago, where the family was advised to seek the services of a private neurologist for further management, according to a Police statement. 

He was subsequently transferred to Old Kampala at the private health facility, where doctors continued treating him. Police said the family was informed by a neurologist that the deceased did not have a brain-related problem.

Monday continued receiving treatment until Sunday, August 16, when he was pronounced dead at about 9:00am.

However, his relatives were reportedly dissatisfied with the circumstances surrounding his death and reported the matter to Busia Central Police Station seeking assistance.Police opened a Death Enquiry File, DEF 039/2026, to establish the circumstances surrounding the death.

A postmortem examination was conducted and statements were obtained from the deceased's relatives.

"Some bruises were also observed on the deceased's forehead," the statement revealed.

Police said inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the death are still ongoing.
