Buganda Road Magistrate Court has given the African Center for Torture and Rehabilitation of Victims (ACTV ) permission to go to prisons to conduct checks on the 22 suspects said to be behind the deadly twin bombings in Kampala last year.

The group linked to the deadly suicide bomb attacks in the Kampala city centre that left scores dead and dozens injured in November last year, on Tuesday, February 15th appeared before Buganda Road magistrate court for the mention of their case.

While appearing before Buganda Road grade one magistrate, Asuman Muhumuza, the suspects claimed they had been tortured severely by the prisons staff.

These through their lawyers also asked the court to allow the African Center for Torture and Rehabilitation of Victims, ACTV to subject them to medical examination, to ascertain the extent of their injuries.

The magistrate went ahead and granted their request allowing the ACTV to visit the suspects in their respective detention facilities.

After Prosecution reported that investigations into the matter are still on, the case was adjourned to March 10, 2022, for further mention.

Prosecution alleges the 22 people who include Yusuf Muwonge, Ismail Kiyemba, Bashir Jukko, Eron Nakitende and others on November 16, 2021, planned and executed two bomb blasts at the Central Police Station and IPS building along Parliamentary Avenue in Kampala. Hamza Ssekidde is representing the suspects.

At least three people were killed and 36 injured in the attack. Four of the suspected bombers blew themselves up and died instantly in the twin attacks on Central Police Station and along Parliamentary Avenue in the city centre.

Uganda government attributed the incidents to armed cells of Allied Democratic Forces ADF militants who mainly operate in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
